This piece imbues a remarkable depth that draws from my early years as a competitive skier and fly fisherman in Aspen/Snowmass. I often think about the seasonal buildup and thaw of snow, its surface repeatedly marked and reshaped by skis and snowboards tracing their way across the mountain. The charcoal incorporated into the painting comes from my own fireplace—an homage to the campfires of my childhood, where a cast may have been thrown on the Pan or Fork.
The industrial forms that emerge throughout the work are subtle references to lift towers as well as the city skylines of Chicago and Austin, places where my identity as a skier often felt out of place or misunderstood. Together, these materials and influences create a visual language that connects landscape, memory, and movement, weaving together experiences from different chapters of my life.
