Theia

2023

38 x 58 inches

House paint, charcoal, pencil, cement, and dye, pressure-washed on raw canvas.

Named after the alleged planet that smashed into Earth creating the moon, Theia explores minimalism through power and visceral movement. The minimal but stoic markings render a sense of Cy Twombly, a major inspiration to Chris. The ancient symbol Chi Ro or ‘chrismon’ is also prominent in the work; though staggered, suggesting dissonance in the theory of creation. Burn holes in the canvas add to the play, as if meteorites had passed through the piece. Additionally, traces from the pressure washer render a sense of lost power, like scars on the surface of the moon.
